We all know the importance of staying healthy through diet and exercise and many of us have invested in devices or apps on our smartphones to monitor how many calories we consume or steps we take in a day. But how do we know we’re doing right by our dogs?

At Unique Pets we only stock healthy food, so whether you are feeding wet, dry or raw food, if you’re buying from us then you can rest assured that it’s good quality. So how do you know if your dog is taking enough steps and doing the right amount of exercise? Enter the PitPat…

What is PitPat?

PitPatPitPat is an easy way of monitoring your dog’s daily exercise even when you’re not there. It is a small lightweight device which fits neatly on your dog’s collar and measures her activity levels so you know how much play and rest she’s had, as well as whether or not she’s had enough walking and running time.

All the data is then quickly downloaded to a free app on your smartphone via a bluetooth connection.

Why use it?

There are numerous reasons you might want to monitor your dog’s activity levels:

  • If you rely on a dog walker, neighbour or relative to walk your dog while you’re at work, you can check that the agreed walks are happening.
  • If your dog is in kennels, it’s fun to see a report of his playtimes when you get back.
  • Many dogs in the UK are overweight and this little gadget can be invaluable to ensure that your dog is getting the required exercise for her breed and age.
  • Conversely, some dogs struggle to keep weight on, which could be down to too much exercise or not settling while the owners are out, the PitPat will see if your dog is resting when he should.
  • PitPat can also be used to help understand your dog’s behaviour throughout the day and see any patterns which emerge, or to monitor any changes in activity during stressful times, such as when owners are on holiday or a bitch is in season.

What does it monitor?

PitPat makes a note of the time your dog spends playing, walking, running and resting, showing you the times of each activity. It also estimates the number of calories your dog has burnt during the day, which will help you adjust how much you feed your dog accordingly. PitPat sets a daily target for your dog’s exercise and tracks progress as to whether or not the goal is being reached.

How does it work?

The gadget simply attaches to your dog’s collar with a strong velcro strap and monitors your dog’s movement throughout the day and night. The data is stored in the device for up to a week, ready to be transferred via a bluetooth connection. All the information is then quickly and easily downloaded into an app on your phone so that you can keep a record of your dog’s activity and chart his progress.

How can you get one?

We are a PitPat stockist and they retail for £39.99.

Alternately, if you would like to rent one to monitor your dog’s current activity levels intermittently, we hire them out for just £15.00 for a fortnight. At the end of the rental, you can either return it or if you’ve enjoyed it, you can buy it for the balance of £24.99.
